About the Community Educator
Shannon Bennett has a BSc in Earth Sciences and has been working in environmental education since the early 80's as a Park Naturalist in Alberta and BC Parks. She loves to inspire, engage, connect, and motivate students to discover and explore their wild local bioregions, to develop curiosity, knowledge, awareness and appreciation of where they live.
"Shanoon was well-prepared and responsive to the needs of the group. We had a wonderful day and learned a lot about winter in the forest. Her pack seemed to have a bottomless supply of cool things to share (shovels, flint and steel, cattail fluff, pictures of prey and predators,...)! Thank you." - June Samulak
"Shanoon is very knowledgeable about winter survival. She paces the activities appropriately for the fitness level and attention span of the students. She learns the students names quickly and uses them. Shanoon encourages students and recognizes their triumphs." - Heather Kennedy
"Shanoon kept the students engaged at all times and provided an in depth knowledge of the environment, the animals and the interaction and connection between this and us when we are iin our local wilderness. " - Theresa Pruss
"very knowledgeable, engages the interest of the students" - Lyn Boisvert
"Shanoon Bennett is very good at engaging students even the ones that struggles with change. She is kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable. As well she is an excellent teacher for students and finds way to relate to them." - Andre Derias
"A great day had by all. All students were engaged. Very formative and Shannoon made it fun even for the less enthusiastic kids" - Vicki Borsato
"As always Shanoon quickly develops a relationship with the students and shares personal information and has students actively engaged all day! She is a wealth of information" - Theresa Pruss
"I love Shanoon's flexibility and adaptability and she always comes with a diversity of activites to engage the students. Plus, I always learn something (and I think I know it all...;-))" - Lawrence Redfern
"Shanoon was amazing and her enthusiasm was contagious. She was super knowledgeable and worked well with my students." - Linda Cote
"I thought Shanoon did a great job of engaging the students. There were lots of games for the students to play and she kept them moving so they weren't too cold. Something I would recommend to Shanoon is to establish more boundaries at the beginning of the lesson. Many students talked during her presentation and although I did my best to manage them I think it would have been more effecitive if she said her expectations at the beginning (no talking while she's talking, stay behind her when they are walking, and participate in all activities). Other than that, the presentation was educational, fun, and engaging. " - Danielle Sonntag
"Shanoon has been our educator for years, on this trip and others. Her positive energy and extensive knowledge makes her an amazing resource person for these children." - Sheena Stienstra
