The Maternity Pen Project, directed by the Arrow Lakes Caribou Society, is one of the management actions of ALCS, that assists in the recovery of Southern Mountain Central Selkirk Caribou.
The maternity pen, located in the Kuskanax Creek area, near Nakusp Hot Springs, is a safe environment for female caribou to bear and raise their calves, away from predators. While caribou are in the maternity pen, we feed them tree lichen which is part of their natural diet in the wild. For 12 animals in the pen, we need 300 kg of dried tree lichen for caribou to eat between March 2025 – July 2025.
