Virtual/Classroom Program
What is it like to crawl into a bear den - with a sleeping bear? What is it like to work in the remote corners of the Kootenays doing Forestry work? How do you plan and guide a 2-week hike through the mountains for paying customers? Get the answers to these questions and more with wildlife biologist, wilderness guide, and outdoor educator Dave Quinn's engaging, story-filled slide show and discussion about outdoor careers in the Kootenays.
Half-day or Full-day Field Study
A career in the outdoors can often entail remote, self-sufficient work sites that may involve some risk of injury, delay, or becoming lost. This program shares the presenter's experiences working outdoors as a wildlife biologist, forestry technician, outdoor educator, and wilderness guide with students in an outdoor setting. Students also learn about traditional survival supplies, resources, and tools that are gifts from their local forests, and get to practice key wilderness skills such as staying found and what to do if you do get lost, and other survival skills such as emergency fire building (depending on season and location), shelter building, and basic wilderness first aid essentials, including patient transport tips and longer term care considerations.
About the Community Educator
Dave Quinn is a wildlife biologist, a BC-certified teacher and a certified wilderness guide who has lead expeditions in the Kootenays, the Canadian Arctic and West Coast, as well as overseas. Dave's work as a photographer and writer has been published in several adventure tourism magazines and scientific publications. As a wildlife technician, Dave has worked on the Purcell Mountain Caribou Study, the Rocky Mountain Lynx Project, the Columbia Valley Badger Project, the Swift Fox Census, and the East Kootenay Fisher Project.

Non-subsidized: Please select this option if you can access funds to pay the full price for this program. By selecting this option, this will allow us to offer more subsidized programs to those schools who don’t have the same support as you might. An unlimited number of programs are available at this payment level.
