About the Program
Learn what techniques are used and how scientists and biologists help migratory birds in research. Students participate in a research study program in Citizen Science while gaining observational skills by sight and sound, learning basic biology/adaptations, while accumulating knowledge and curiosity about the natural world. The great migration phenomenon. Upper elementary students will be designing a tracking device and mapping a bird on its journey south.
Participate in some citizen science by joining me in a nature walk for a half a day or an online webinar.
This lesson will be in the afternoon in the colder months and can be done earlier in the morning in summer when it’s too hot out.
Learn why scientists and biologists band and capture migratory birds for research. Basic bird identification and special features/ characteristics biologists look and listen for.
Students will become Bird Bandits. Learn some ecology about birds. Learn about migration and bird adaptations. Learn about survival techniques and the hazards that migratory birds face. Workshop will be full of games and puzzles to suit appropriate age groups.
Students will learn bird banding techniques and how they are applied.
We have many surveying projects that involve students in Citizen Science every year from Nest watch, Ebird, Audubon, Rocky Mountain Eagle Research Foundation and Cornel Lab of Ornithology to monitoring for nests and breeding birds surveys.
This program can also be done in school yards if birds present.
Materials You Will Need to Bring
Please bring clipboards for adults and students. Binoculars from SD5 resource center for students and a pencil for each student. I have Dry erase pens. Please bring 2 colors of team vests for all students. You can get all of these from the SD5 resource center.
I appreciate having student names written on name tags/stickers.
Please ensure the students are prepared for outdoor time with appropriate clothes hat , boots, insect spray, snack and water to drink.
Adults are welcome to bring a waterfowl/ bird guide or identification key for identifying species of waterfowl or birds. I will have group guide books to use as well as birding identification pamphlets for students to use.
About the Community Educator
I am an Applied Biology Technologist and Environmental Educator. Delivering engaging creative lessons of citizen science bioblitz studies to children in nature through science based education and modeIing techniques. I am very passionate about the outdoors and love to share my ideas to children so it may one day spring that interest to become a biologist someday. I have lived in the East Kootenays most of my life and belong to many societies that conserve and restore, ecological integrity in our communities and beyond. I have a very strong background in native plant biology and wildlife/amphibian surveying. I want to bring back the excitement and curiosity about the environment that all children should have and give them a sense of wonder what's really out there.
