While walking through the community, local green space, or park students will find a sense of wonder while learning about coniferous and deciduous trees. Broadleaf verses evergreen. Looking at tree shape, leaf structure, bark texture, seeds, cones, branches, roots, needles and sap, and through the use of math skills and other engaging activities, students will start to understand how to identify trees. Identifying neighbourhood native trees, their features, and distinct characteristics. Having them discover and explore the outdoors matching tree, cone, seed and leaf sets to proper trees in the crown forest. They will learn to discover, engage in and
explore their sense of wonder in nature and make a weather station back at school or at home.
Students will also learn about seed dispersal, how animals depend on trees, and traditional use of certain trees by First Nations. This lesson is filled with activities and games to play while learning about neighbourhood trees.
We can do this nearby in greenspace if a lot of different trees around but will need to be collecting things for an activity or downtown Cranbrook is better. Will need a bus if not in walking distance to Baker Park. Can be done at a BC Park or lake we are looking for certain animals that feed on trees as well as cones and leaves and animal nests. let me know where you wish to go before hand.
At the end of the program students will be able to show others how to identify trees in their backyard. Older students will find out how to use a tree key. K-2 can also participate in some nature art. Just let me know if you would like to do an art project instead of learning about tree keys.
