About the Program
This program will be an introduction to how science is a part of everyday life in Revelstoke. Beginning with introducing the atmosphere, playing a game to identify what is in our air and what it does for us. Moving to the connection with how trees and plants create oxygen for us we will then take a walk in the forest, beginning with a treasure hunt (survey) of species, how to identify different species and how they all live together as part of an ecosystem including the earth and soil (soil stratigraphy) and water, and why this part of BC is so unique. This then will lead us to move from the Geosphere (Hard part of Earth) to the Hydrosphere (Water) and how these Earth systems are interconnected. We will take a walk to the river and talk about the hydrological cycle, how water is transported around the Earth, how it is stored (looking at glaciers, groundwater) and why it is so important for life to flourish.
About the Community Educators
Both Jade and Alex have a BSc in Physical Geography, and the two of them have written and delivered programs about climate, earth science, and geology to students in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, and now in Canada. Jade and Alex enjoy being able to share their knowledge and passion for the natural world and the pure magic that underpins the interconnecting cycles that make our planet work and habitable for us.
"Both Alex and Jade were very knowledgeable and very good with the kids. Their energy and stoke for science was infectious. " - Megan Bouvette
