About the Program
Bats make up 20% of the mammal species on earth, and we have 15 bat species in BC alone! A local bat biologist will come into any classroom to describe the life of a local bat. Adjustable to any grade level, details about bat physiology, ecology, benefits and "fascinating facts" will focus on bats found in Golden, but mention the incredible diversity of this group of animals around the world. Ecosystem services provided by bats, conservation, and threats to local bat populations can also be discussed. Depending on grade levels, crafts and discussions helps to round out the time. Resources can be provided for the classroom for follow-up.
We use interesting props and activities to reinforce concepts of echolocation, adaptation and ecology.
About the Community Educator
Laura is a wildlife biologist who has worked in bat ecology and conservation and also has a B.Ed. with a specialization in Indigenous Education. Laura loves to study the interconnectedness of our ecosystems (including humans!) and how species rely on each other and interact in often unexpected ways.
