About the Program
Bats make up 20% of the mammal species on earth, and we have 15 bat species in BC alone! A local bat biologist will come into any classroom to describe the life of a local bat. Adjustable to any grade level, details about bat physiology, ecology, benefits and "fascinating facts" will focus on bats found in Golden, but mention the incredible diversity of this group of animals around the world. Ecosystem services provided by bats, conservation, and threats to local bat populations can also be discussed. Depending on grade levels, crafts and discussions helps to round out the time. Resources can be provided for the classroom for follow-up.

We use interesting props and activities to reinforce concepts of echolocation, adaptation and ecology.

About the Community Educator
Laura is a wildlife biologist who has worked in bat ecology and conservation and also has a B.Ed. with a specialization in Indigenous Education. Laura loves to study the interconnectedness of our ecosystems (including humans!) and how species rely on each other and interact in often unexpected ways.

3. Seasonal changes affects living things (K)
4. Living things have behaviours that help them survive in their environment (Gr 1)
5. Classification of living things and names of local species (Gr 1)
6. Living things have life cycles adapted to their environment (Gr 2)
7. Biodiversity in the local environment (Gr 3)
8. Living things interact in their ecosystems (Gr 3)
9. How species respond to their local environment (hibernation for example) (Gr 4)
10. The physiology of the diversity of species (Gr 5 and 6)
11. How species have evolved and adapted to their local environment (Gr 7)
12. Characteristics of life (Gr 8)
13. Reproduction and ecology - interconnectedness, sustainability, food webs (Gr 9)
14. Adaptation (Gr 10)
15. Many links in Life Sciences 11 and Anatomy and Physiology 12
Other links that occur across all grade levels are:
1. Showing a sustained curiosity about the natural world
