Homestead Visits - Honing Homestead Skills
|Type||Full Day Field Study|
|Location||Argenta, North Kootenay Lake|
|Contact This Presenterfirstname.lastname@example.org|
Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. Honing some homesteading skills can be very useful in today’s world where we are very reliant on modern technologies and face challenges related to climate change.
This is a full-day field trip to two homesteads in Argenta, where students are introduced to the concept of self-sufficiency, as well an overview of small-scale food production, preservation and storage (depending on the time of year). They will have a hands-on experience with dairy goats, chickens and ducks, and planting or harvesting vegetables in the garden. They will also be introduced to an off-grid homestead with solar panels and a micro-hydro power system.
Students will be engaged in a few simple homesteading tasks such as cheese-making, planting seeds, harvesting, fermentation, etc. They will have a chance to taste and sample the “fruits of their labour”.
Most importantly, students will turn off their electronics, and be engaged in conversations with local homesteaders about yearly food production vs. consumption, planning for the year, challenges and rewards, good stories, and self-sufficient lifestyle.
Program can be adapted to curriculum needs and age levels.
